The Apple Vision Pro is set to launch on February 2, and while it will come with a wide range of features and content options, one notable absence from the lineup is a dedicated Netflix app. According to a statement provided to TechCrunch by a Netflix spokesperson, members will have to make do with the web version of the streaming service.
No Native App for Apple Vision Pro
"Our members will be able to enjoy Netflix on the web browser on the Vision Pro, similar to how our members can enjoy Netflix on Macs," said the spokesperson. This is not entirely surprising, as Bloomberg reported in July that Netflix had no plans for a native app.
Comparison with Disney+ and Other Platforms
While the browser version should perform similarly to the iPad version of Netflix, this news may be a disappointment for subscribers who were hoping for an immersive experience on their new headset. In contrast, Disney+ has already announced its intention to offer a more robust VR experience, with four backdrops inspired by Marvel’s Avengers Tower, Pixar’s Monsters Inc., and other popular franchises.
Netflix’s Meta Quest App: A Less Than Stellar Experience
This lack of investment in VR headsets is not isolated to the Apple Vision Pro. Netflix’s Meta Quest app has been criticized for its poor quality, with many users complaining about the "awful resolution" and bugs. One user summed up their experience:
"The Netflix app on my Meta Quest is a disaster. I’ve tried watching a few different shows, but the video always cuts out or gets stuck on a single frame. It’s frustrating to say the least."
The Vision Pro’s Price Point: A Barrier to Adoption
One reason for Netflix’s lack of enthusiasm for VR headsets may be the high price point of the Apple Vision Pro. At $3,500, it is a luxury item that many consumers may not be willing or able to afford.
Availability and Preorders
Despite this, the Apple Vision Pro will still offer users access to a wide range of content, including 150 3D movies available for rent or purchase. Other popular services like Disney+, Apple TV+, Max, Discovery+, Paramount+, Prime Video, Peacock, Pluto TV, and Tubi will also be available.
Preorders for the device open tomorrow, January 19, at 8 a.m. ET, giving potential buyers their first chance to get their hands on one of these cutting-edge headsets.
Conclusion
While the absence of a dedicated Netflix app may be a disappointment for some users, it is clear that Apple is committed to delivering an immersive and engaging experience with the Vision Pro. Whether or not this will be enough to convince consumers to take the plunge remains to be seen.
